In the Middle Ages, you couldn't just go to the Real Estate broker and buy land, you had to fight your opposition for it. (Unless of course it was given to you by the king, but that was rare).
CLASSES OF WARRIOR
There were three main types of warrior in the Middle Ages, the Knights, the foot soldiers or infantry and the archers. Typically, knights were the richest of the classes which was necessary, just the war horse alone could cost the equivalent of a small plane.Knights would give their military service in return for land and money from the crown as part of the feudal system. As the Middle Ages progressed, knights began to pay "shield money" which meant that they could give money to not fight in the kings army. With the money, the king would build up an army and the Knights who paid would not have to fight in the frontlines but would still be on standby for raiding and pillaging.
SEIGES
Siege warfare in the medieval period was important and required immense strategic thought. The attackers would have to think of how to break their way into their enemies castle or fort and how to cause minimal death to their side. The defenders on the other hand would be having to think about how to destroy the siege machines, I halt the enemies onslaught and cause as much harm as they can.
